“Alice Neel,” Andrew Neel’s eclectic documentary about his grandmother’s life and work as a portrait painter, is a rich portrait of her 84 years. Slightly unsteady but heartfelt, it celebrates a long life without the descendant taking over the tale, and its glimpses of twentieth century Greenwich Village art and ambition is fine. Interviewees include Chuck Close, Michael Auder, Richard Neel and Phillip Bonosky. 81m. 35mm. (Ray Pride)
