One of the world’s greatest public art displays or one of the greatest ego-hoaxes of all time? Filmmakers Antonio Ferrera, Albert Maysles, Matthew Prinzing and the late David Maysles fall on the side of “art” in their depiction, almost thirty years in the making, of the 2005 erection of twenty-three miles by long-married couple Christo and Jean-Claude (and Maysles subjects) of framed orange fabric along the pathways of New York’s Central Park. (Albert and his brother David shot Christo’s first glimmers of hope in 1979.) The process is fascinating to watch and “The Gates” makes a convincing case for its beauty, its brief moment in the urban landscape. 99m. (Ray Pride) BOX
