With the recent sentencing of Michael Vick, it seems appropriate that local filmmaker Cindy Deir’s winning entry into the Humane Society of the United States’ “Knock Out Animal Fighting” video contest would air this week. A passionate animal lover, Deir had already established something of a reputation in making well-received shorts on YouTube, but she never imagined those efforts would translate into a TV commercial. The video, entitled “Ms. Paisley Sky,” is named after a dog, seen exclusively in her commercial. When asked about the man who has become the poster child of dogfighting, Deir says, “Michael Vick is the best thing that ever happened when it comes to the issue of dogfighting.” She also hopes that because of Vick and the national attention “dogfighters are more scared now, maybe they’ll think twice before doing it.” Deir’s commercial airs December 10-15 on MSNBC, HLN and MTV2 between the hours of 4pm and midnight.
