Charlie Chaplin’s 1931 classic, shown in a newly struck 35mm print, was made after the advent of sound, yet “City Lights,” a mixture of slapstick, heart and hope relies on sound effects, music and a fair amount of genius. The Tramp falls for a blind woman: would she recognize him if she could see? The ending is shattering, beautiful, intimate, epic. 87m. (Ray Pride)
