White sugar equals black slavery: the blunt, simple moral of Bill Haney’s “The Price of Sugar,” a documentary about the Dominican Republic’s sugar trade, narrated by Paul Newman. The center of the story is Father Christopher Hartley, who worked with Mother Teresa for two decades, a furious man who comes across as an avatar of benevolence and social justice. The concentration-camp level conditions are appalling, infuriating and part of our own economic system, as Haney comprehensively indicates. Hartley consistently places himself in peril, and we marvel at his commitment and hope for his safety with each successive scene. 90m. (Ray Pride)
