James Crump’s “Black White + Gray: A Portrait of Sam Wagstaff and Robert Mapplethorpe” is art and artifact, combining the photography favored after a lifetime of disavowing the form by curator Wagstaff, whose eyes were opened by his younger boyfriend, provocateur Mapplethorpe. Extensive interviews include those who looked upon the waspy Wagstaff as a sugar daddy, but also more sympathetic ones from such figures as Dominick Dunne and also Patti Smith, whose life, love and work mingled so much with Mapplethorpe’s.
