Arne Johnson and Shane King’s “Girls Rock! The Movie” is a smooth little fistful of goodness, following four girls aged 7 to 17 through a year at Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls in Portland. Portland-born and pals since grade school, Johnson and King picked geographically (and behaviorally) diverse subjects with appealing results. A highlight of Hot Docs 2007 and True/False 2008, “Girls Rock!” captures the awkward greatness of girlhood. The lessons the young women learn, from instructors that include Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney and Beth Ditto—to define yourself against the incredible pressures society exacts in so many ways—are worth their wail in gold. Girls rock; “Girls Rock!” rules. Plus that Kathleen Hanna soundtrack… 87m. (Ray Pride)
