Unremarkable romantic comedy pairs Tom and Hannah. They meet in 1998 in Cornell University. Judging from the clumsy art direction, this may be Ivy League product placement. Wearing a Bill Clinton mask, Tom (Patrick Dempsey from seventy-five episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy”) hops into the bed of his Monica Lewinsky-masked lay. Oops, it’s her roommate Hannah (Michelle Monaghan from “Gone Baby Gone” and “The Heartbreak Kid”). Ten years later they’re good friends in NYC. He’s a suave bed-hopper. He invented the cardboard coffee-cup collar so he’s supposedly stupidly rich. She’s an art museum curator. She comes back from an acquisitions foray to Scotland with an engagement ring from a royal. Hannah picks Tom—best friend, never boyfriend—as her maid of honor. Tom decides it’s time to declare his long-ignored love for Hannah. Writers Adam Sztykiel, Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont offer routine pre-marital humor. Tom’s male pals on the basketball court and Hannah’s bridesmaids furnish lame backup. Ending the film with another Clinton-between-the-sheets bit is quite inane. Director Paul Weiland (“City Slickers II”) scores his most tender sentiment when Tom kisses a dog and says, “I love you.” With Kevin McKidd, Kathleen Quinlan and Sydney Pollack. 101m. Anamorphic 2.40 widescreen. (Bill Stamets)
