Aditya Assarat’s “Wonderful Town” is a poetic romance unfolding after great tragedy, tracing the gestures of a pair of Thai lovers (Supphasit Kansen, Anchalee Saisoontorn) in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. Set in the oceanfront village of Pakua Pak, where 8,000 are said to have died, “Wonderful Town” is reminiscent of the gentle characteristics of countryman Apichatpong Weerasethakul, but Assarat’s observant, gifted eye provides a singular graceful, timeless air of the perfume that rises from decay, the scent of life going on, the suggestion of ghosts that are never quelled. 92m. 35mm.
