Two best friends from New Jersey share a childhood dream of weddings in the Palm Court of The Plaza Hotel in New York City. Twenty years later, they’re both engaged—not to each other—and make an appointment together with “the most sought-after wedding planner in Manhattan.” “You have been dead until now,” pronounces Marion (Candice Bergen). “You’re dead right now.” Your life will start at your perfect wedding. At The Plaza there are two openings for June 6th and one for the 27th. Perfect. One takes the 6th, the other the 27th. That way they can be maid of honor for each other. Oops. Mistake. Both are booked for the 6th. This is the silk flower premise of a thin screenplay by Greg DePaul, Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael that is directed by Gary Winick (“Tadpole,” “13 Going On 30”). It’s Liv (Kate Hudson from “My Best Friend’s Girl” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”) versus Emma (Anne Hathaway from “Rachel Getting Married” and the two “The Princess Diaries”). Liv is a big deal lawyer who power-walks over adversaries, and Emma is a middle-school teacher, the better jogger and dancer of the two, who always gets walked over. Prior to the pair scheming to sabotage each other’s nuptials, Hudson and Hathaway are victimized by the hair and makeup styles inflicted on their characters. Both look bad. And this is before Emma dons a disguise and switches colors at the hair salon, so Liv gets punky blue tints; and before Liv dons a disguise and switches colors at the tanning spa, so Emma gets burnt-orange skin. Artificially sweetened smiles and cheap happy tears. The forever-ness of pals. Yep. With Kristen Johnson, Bryan Greenberg, Chris Pratt, Steve Howey and Michael Arden. Widescreen. (Bill Stamets)
